This porcelain jug had an old, damaged and inappropriate repair. The jug was very dirty, and the cherub had a broken shoulder and a very poorly made reconstruction of the head and arm, which was disintegrating.
Detail of old repair: head and arm.
Restoration process.
This ornate porcelain jug had an old repair which was breaking down, a modelled head and arm had been added and the back of the cherub was broken.
The old repair was taken down and the whole item was cleaned.
A mould was taken from an existing cherub, then cast in plaster, however as the top of the head was missing, the back of the head had to be modelled onto the plaster cast.
Another mould was taken from the completed head, then cast in 20/20 Araldite with fillers added. A wire was inserted into the cast whilst still liquid to enable it to be fixed to the body of the cherub.
The head was painted with Golden Acrylic paints and Glaze.
The body was modelled out of Milliput epoxy putty, sanded with micromesh, then painted with Golden Acrylic paints then glazed.
